Barren Island volcano is 135 km ENE of Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar islands. It is the northernmost volcano in the Indonesian arc. Barren Island is circular (10 sq km) & consists of a 1.6 km wide soma and a central cone. Two spatter cones on the south-eastern and western flanks of the cinder cone formed during the 1994-95 eruption. Pre-caldera activity consists of five lava flows separated by scoria fall beds and minor ash tuff and cinder deposits.

Viper Island gets its name from the snakes that inhabit the island. The islands are famous for the ruins of a jail that precedes the cellular jail or the Kaala Paani. This jail was formerly used to punish political prisoners & one can still see the ruins of the gallows on this island. This jail had many notable political prisoners from India's struggle for independence. It's a picturesque & one of the most important tourist destinations in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Located on Chatham Island (reached by a road bridge), the sawmill was set up by the British in 1883 and was one of the largest wood processors in Asia. The mill is still operational, and while it may not be to everyone’s taste, especially conservationists, it’s an interesting insight into the island’s history and economy. Look out for the bomb crater left by Japanese ordnance in WWII. Since the Supreme Court of India banned logging in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, most of the wood now comes by ship from Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand.

By Air: - Port Blair is connected with Delhi, Chennai, and Kolkata by air. 

 

 

By Sea: - Regular passenger ship services are available to Port Blair from Chennai, Kolkata, Vishakhapatnam, and back. There are three to four sailings every month from Kolkata and Chennai to Port Blair and vice-versa. There is one sailing from Vishakhapatnam in a month.
