About Bellary

Located on the eastern side of Karnataka State, Bellary city is bounded by Raichur district on the north, by Dharwad district on the west, Chitradurga and Davangere districts on the south and Anantapur, Kurnool districts of Andhra Pradesh on east. The city stands in the midst of a wide, level plain of black cotton soil. The name Bellary originates from the word Balari which refers to Goddess Durugamma, who had manifested herself in the town. Bellary is the headquarters of the district of the same name in the state of Karnataka. An industrial town consisting of 7 taluks, Bellary city stands in the midst of a wide, level plain of black cotton soil filled with granite rocks and hills which form a prominent feature of the city.  The city is spread mainly around two huge rocky granite hills, the Ballari Hill and Kumbara Hill. These two hills are dominant features of the city, and are visible from every part of the city. It is also said as per the myths that while Rama was searching for Sita, met Sugreeva and Hanuman at a place near Hampi. According to history, this place has played significant role during Satavahanas, Kadambas, Chalukyas of Kalyana, Kalachuryas, Sevunas, and Hoysalas period.

1: Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary
Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary
Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary is located in Bellary district in Karnataka. It is spread over 55.87 sq kms. The sanctuary was exclusively created for the preservation of Indian Sloth bears. Govt. of Karnataka declared 5587 hectares of Bilikallu reserve forest as a Daroji Bear Sanctuary in October 1994. The area between Daroji in Sandur taluk and Ramasagar of Hospet Taluk hosts to the Sloth Bears. The unique Sloth Bear sanctuary is situated very close to this heritage site. Situated only 15 kms from Hampi, Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary is the only sanctuary in North Karnataka. Daroji Bear Sanctuary Though the sanctuary is relatively new, which began in 1994 in the eastern plains of Karnataka, it has proved to be a suitable habitat for the Indian Sloth Bears in a span of few years.  
 
2: Hampi
Hampi
Hampi was the capital city of the magnificent Vijayanagara Empire. Founded by Harihara and Bukka in 1336, it fell to the rulers of Northern India in 1565 after the Battle of Talikota, and subsequently lapsed into decline and abandonment. The once proud city of victory is now a city of desolation. However, the ruins of these historical monuments have stood the ravages of man and time and still evoke memories of regal splendour.

Hospet is a small town lies on the river banks of the Tungabhadra. This town is located in Bellary District of Karnataka. It is the admirable tourist destination which is about 325 kms from the capital city of Bangalore. This place is also considered as a gateway to Hampi. This city is also well known as the large production of iron ore and steel. Tourist can get various opportunities to visit ample of sights such as Chitradurga, Harihara, Hampi, Virupaksha temple. Temples of this city has rich architectural which attracts large amount of travellers to visit there. Many big iron mines and steel mills are also easily available around this area. History of this town tells that it was built in 1520 AD by Krishna Deva Raya. He made this town in the memory of his mother Nagalambika. Earlier this city was named as Nagalapura and people as Hosa Pete which means New City.  
 
4: Tungabhadra Dam
Tungabhadra Dam
Tungabhadra Dam is built across the river Tungabhadra. It is one of the biggest multipurpose dams in Karnataka. It is spread over an area of 400 sq kms. This dam also forms a great place of recreation for tourists with its beautiful gardens, children play parks and aquarium and musical fountain. The Tungabhadra is a river of southern India. It is the chief tributary of the Krishna River. It formed by the confluence of two rivers, the Tunga and the Bhadra, which rise in the eastern slope of the Western Ghats, in the state of Karnataka. The Tungabhadra flows east across the Deccan Plateau, joining the Krishna in Andhra Pradesh state, from where the Krishna continues east to empty into the Bay of Bengal. The wedge of land that lies north of the Tungabhadra, between the Tungabhadra and the Krishna, is known as the Raichur Doab. Vast stretch of Beautiful Garden enhances the unforgettable view of the Dam.  
 
5: Ramanadurga Hill Station
Ramanadurga Hill Station
Ramanadurga is a small hill station and a village near Sandur. It is known for ancient fort built by the Prince of Kampli. There is also a Ramadeva Temple which has been restored. However, the fort is in ruins. Ramanadurga Hill Station provides a breathtaking view of Sandur and the surrounding villages. Sandur or Sanduru is one of the famous towns in Bellary and it is known for manganese deposits. Ramanadurga or Ramgad is around 16 kms from Sandur.

By Air - Though there is an airport at Bellary, no international flights run from here. This domestic airport has flights to places like Goa and Bangalore that have international airports.

By Train - Tourists can access to any place in Karnataka from the Bellary Railway Station. Bellary is well connected by Rail to Bangalore, Raichur, Tirupati, Hubli, Guntakal, Vijayawada etc. 

By Bus - Bellary city is well connected by bus services to all major cities, towns and important cities of neighbouring states.

By Road - Bellary is linked with the rest of the state by a vast network of well connected roads. It is on National Highway 63 Ankola Gooty road.
