About Idukki

Idukki is an alluring retreat for tourists in God’s Own Country. Clad in the dense green forest and crowned with verdant mountains, it boasts of Anamudi, the highest peak in India. Besides, it also takes pride in being the abode of the second largest arch dam in the world. Idukki bears testimony of a stone-age civilization, though many historians believe Paleolithic men inhabited here. Contrived as a district on 26 January 1972, Idukki, the second largest in Kerala, comprises many towns such as Devikulam, Adimali, Udumbanchola, Thekkady, Murrikkaddy, Peermede, and Thodapuzha. 

The Idukki Arch Dam, Kulamavu Dam, and Cheruthoni Dam are the three major dams in Idukki & a visit to these dams is worthwhile as they have scenic backdrops. Moreover, a wind energy farm Ramakkalmedu is a hill station & a tourist hotspot of Idukki. Malankara Reservoir is visitors’ favorite place for boating and fishing. Idukki has many attractions in store for its visitors. Apart from the beautiful landscape, it contains numerous tea gardens and coffee plantations, serene springs and enchanting waterfalls, and a handful of animal reserves and sanctuaries.

1: St. Georges Church
St. Georges Church
St. George's Church, known as the old CSI Christ Church, is the headquarters of the CSI Munnar Pastorate with over a thousand Tamil families and 18 outstation churches. The church, counted amongst the most revered sites in Munnar, was built in AD 1910 by the British. This holy site is known for its exquisite stained glass windows.

Devikulam Lake, popularly known as the Sita Devi Lake, attracts picnickers because it is a scenic spot & also the waters here are enriched with minerals that have curative properties. The lake has a thermal water spring that attracts people who want to spend their time in serenity. Nature here has wonderfully manifested itself into so many forms that one is mesmerized. Another factor adding to the sacredness & purity of this lake is the legends claiming that Goddess Sita of the epic Ramayana has herself bathed here. With the shade of tall trees, lush green lawns, & crystal clear waters gushing through the rocks, & the chirping of birds, Sita Devi Lake would serve as a perfect getaway destination.

Eagle Rock (Parunthupara), situated near Peerumedu, also known as Grampa, because of the panoramic view from its high peaks. Rocky plains, lush hillsides, forests, trekking trails, and picturesque views add charm to this destination. The road to Eagle Rock is flanked by unending stretches of cardamom, tea, and coffee plantations. Eagle Rock is about 5 km from Peermedu & about 10 km from Vandiperiyar.  
 
4: Kalvari Mount

The Kalvari Mount stands tall 5 kms away from Idukki and is placed on the Kattapana Idukki road. Kalvari Mount has a very steep slope and is a tourist hotspot. The place is famous for the procession during Good Friday and Lent. During the month of April, devotees march in a procession carrying crosses to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It gives a mesmerising view of the nearby places. From one angle tourists can see the Idukki Arch Dam to Ayyappan Kovil. From another view one can see the Kamakshy and Mariyapuram villages. Kalvari Mount is a popular tourist hotspot as it is ideal for trekking and for picnics. If trekking to the hill, one can even spot elephants on the way. The breeze and the chirping birds will make forgot all worries and there are small huts around the area, making an overnight stay possible in the hills.

The sprawling plantations and an old tea factory lend an old-world charm to this place. Go on a guided tour through the factory. The two-storied building, built in the 1930s, with its wooden interiors & aroma, & presents some traditional methods of tea processing. Tea lovers will be pleased to sip different tea types from the tea tasting center. Those wanting to take home the flavor can buy fresh packets from the outlet attached to the factory. Kolukkumalai is about 7900 ft above sea level & one can have some excellent views of the far-off plains in the bordering State of Tamil Nadu.

Located about 3 km from Vazhikkadavu in Kottayam, Kurisumala is this renowned Christian pilgrim center where hundreds of devotees from far and near converge during the holy week and climb the hill in faith, carrying small wooden crosses. The peaceful Monastery at the top of the hill, the silence of the hills, the cool mountain air, and the lush green landscape are all soothing to the soul. The road to Kurisumala offers some real sightseeing opportunities in a European model house and the beautiful artificial lake.

Mangala Devi Temple is one of the major tourist attractions at a distance of about 15 km from Thekkady & is on top of a peak at an elevation of 1337 meters above sea level and offers a picturesque view of the surrounding hills and tracts. Mangala Devi Temple is an ancient temple surrounded by dense forests & travelers will find it mesmerizing. The structure of this spectacular stone temple attests to the grandeur of traditional Pandian architectural style. Goddess Mangala, also known as Kannaki, is the presiding deity in the temple. The only means to access this 2000-year-old temple are jeeps, which travelers can hire from Kumily. The temple offers a scenic setting and tranquil ambiance to the visitors & an ideal spot is worth a visit.

Mount Carmel Church is one of Munnar's important places of religious importance, established in 1898. Father Alphonse of the Spanish Mission started the first Catholic Church in the region. This church was the final resting place of Father Alphonse after he passed away. Beautiful statues of Jesus Christ and Mother Mary add immense grace to this church. One can spend quality time in the tranquil environs of this place.

Thoovanam Falls is in Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary & is 18 km north of Marayoor. This waterfall is gorgeous with its mighty silvery cascades & serves as an ideal destination for travelers and photographers alike. This stunning waterfall is a perfect spot for any nature lover & formed by the river Pambar which flows eastward through the sanctuary.
