Known as the resting place of Lord Shiva, Puri in the state of Orissa is alongside the coast of the Bay of Bengal. The history & heritage of Puri dates back to the 3rd century BC. Puri, Konark, & Bhubaneshwar complete the Golden Triangle of Orissa, with their religious significance and cultural heritage being the centers of tourism in this state. 1: Jagannath Temple

The 12th-century Jagannath temple, built by Chodaganga to commemorate the shifting of his capital from South to Central Orissa, stands in a compound on Nilgiri Hill and is surrounded by a 20-foot high wall, within which lie several smaller shrines. In front of the main gate of Jagannath temple stands a 16-sided & 11 meters high monolithic pillar called Aruna Stambha, which formally stood in front of the Sun Temple. This stunning Vaishnava temple enshrines Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra, and Balabhadra. The temple also hosts the biggest festival in Odisha, the Rath Yatra, attracting thousands of pilgrims and tourists. The Jagannath Temple is one of the most sacred Hindu Temples in India. The temple is a part of the Char Dham Hindu pilgrimage and is a must-visit attraction in Puri. 
 
2: Sakhigopal

Sakhigopal, located at a distance of nearly 10 to 20 kilometers from Puri, is one of the famous pilgrimage spots of Odisha. It is an ideal place to get an insight into the Hindu philosophies and learn more about the religion. Sakhigopal is known for the Sakhigopal Temple & is a temple dedicated to Lord Krishna.

Chilika Lake is crowned as Asia's largest brackish water lagoon, sheltered in the heart of coastal Odisha & is known as one of the most beautiful wetlands in the world as it inhabits a variety of birds. Chilika Lake shows tourists a mind-boggling display of its avian charms in a million different colors & presented by around 160 species in the peak season between November and February. The lake & its islands provide shelters to many birds such as white-bellied sea eagles, ospreys, golden plovers, sand pipers, flamingos, pelicans & many more. 5: Vaishnava Temple

Vaishnava Temple in Konark is a beautiful temple located within the complex of Sun temple. The shrine is one of several smaller ones that surround the main temple of the Sun. This shrine is one of the two temples that have managed to survive the fury of nature & today stands proudly near the grand Sun temple. But the main superstructure of the Vaishnava Temple is missing. This temple was constructed of large bricks & covered with plaster of lime and sand. The temple is decorated, with an extraordinary depiction of several animals, like horses and elephants.

Situated in the midway of the Grand road, Balagandi square, there is a small temple dedicated to Goddess Mausima. The Goddess is called Mausi Maa, the mother's sister of Lord Jagannath. Mausima is a combination of two words, Mausi and Maa. In Oriya, Mausi means Aunt & Maa means Goddess. Goddess Mausima is also known as Ardhasini. It is a belief among the local people that Goddess Ardhasini, together with Kapalamochana Shiva, act as the day and night guardians of Puri town. 
 
7: Shri Lokanatha Temple

Shree Lokanath Temple ranks next in popularity after the Jagannath Temple of Puri and is just 3 km from the world-famous Jagannath temple. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva & said that it was under a pond over here that Lord Shiva had hidden from Shani. People believe that the Linga of this temple was mounted there by Lord Ramachandra. A natural spring of the adjacent Parvati tank ensures that this Linga contained in the small square-shaped container is always in the water. 
 
8: Balihar Chandi Temple

Balihar Chandi Temple, a temple dedicated to Goddess Durga, is situated 27 km southwest of Puri when you travel towards Brahmagiri and Satapada. The beautiful temple stands on a sandy hill very close to the ocean. Devotees worship Goddess Durga as Goddess Balihar Chandi & hence the name & this temple is situated on the banks of the river Bhargavi, making it not just a pilgrimage spot but a beautiful scenic area too.
 
9: Shyamakali Temple

Goddess Kali is worshipped at the Shyamakali temple in Puri, the oldest temple in the city. Tourists can approach the temple by using the road leading towards Swargadwar from Singhadwar of Lord Jagannath Temple & there is a diversion to Bali Sahi. Festivals like Kali Puja, Deepavali, Durga Puja, and Jagadhatri puja are observed here with great devotion. Goddess Kali is also called Shyamakali, who is said to be the first of the ten incarnations of Goddess Durga. In this temple, Goddess Kali stands in Pratyalidha pose on the chest of Lord Shiva and possesses four hands.

Shree Gundicha temple, situated in Gundicha square & is very close to the Puri bus stand and is best known as the birthplace of Lord Jagannath & for the Rath Yatra festival. The temple is also known as the Gundicha Ghar or Gundicha Mandir. After the Jagannath Temple, the Shree Gundicha Temple is the second most prominent place of Lord Jagannath in Puri. The temple flaunts the typical architecture of the Kalingan era. The 75 feet high and 430 feet long temple made of light grey sandstone is right in the center of a beautiful garden.

Puri Beach is a popular tourist attraction in the city & is considered one of the best beaches in India that is ideal for swimming. One of the most notable beaches in Odisha, Balighai’s pristine beach is relatively undiscovered & is at the mouth of the Nuanai River. Balighai is about 8 km Northeast of Puri, famous for the Lord Jagannath temple. The beach is a major attraction as it is an excellent place to enjoy time with family and friends. The beach sand glitters on full moon nights, giving it a magical feel. Boat rides are available, which allow enjoying a sunbath or fighting the waves and refreshing the mind with a dip in the sea. There are other water sports available like water skiing and parasailing. Tourists can visit the Balihirana Deer Sanctuary, where they can spot the endangered Balihirana antelope and Indian Black Bucks. The Sea Turtle Research Centre, a short distance from the beach, is also worth a visit.

Pipli is a small hamlet near Bhubaneswar. The village is famous primarily for its handicrafts. Pipli produces bright and beautiful applique crafts on items like handbags, umbrellas, shoes, clothes, wall hangings, pillow covers, cushion covers, bedcovers, & many more. But the one thing that catches everyone’s fancy as soon as they enter Pipli is the bright canopies. This form of handicraft has been a preferred occupation of the villagers for a long. The craftsman selects beautiful patterns depending on flowers, birds, animals, trees, and the sun and then combines textiles to produce an exceptional design.

How To Reach Puri

By Air - The nearest airport is Bhubaneswar. Puri is just an hour journey from Bhubaneswar which is around 56 km away. The Bhubaneswar Airport is well-connected to others parts of Odisha as well as India. Buses are taxis are available from the airport to Puri.

 

By Rail - There is a railway station in Puri. Direct rail services are available from Puri to many important places in Odisha as well as India such as, Kolkata, New Delhi, Guwahati, Bangalore, Chennai etc.

 

By Road - Puri is connected by well maintained road. State own buses as well as private buses are available from all the major places in Odisha. Puri is connected with the neighbouring cities through well constructed roads. Buses are considered to be the main option to travel to Puri as the bus stand in near the Gundicha Temple. Bhubaneshwar and Cuttack can be reached in 15 minutes by bus.

 

Local Tranport - Delux buses from Orissa Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) can be availed for sightseeing and other tourist activities in Puri. Travelling within the city is facilitated by various modes of transport like cycle-rickshaw, auto-rickshaw and hired motorbikes. Cycle rickshaws are the most economical option. The meters of the auto rickshaws usually don't work so one must know how to strike a bargain.
