1: Ukhimath
Ukhimath
Ukhimath is a pilgrimage site at an elevation of 1311 meters above sea level, situated on the Gopeshwar Guptkashi road in Rudraprayag. During winters, heavy snowfall forces the closure of the main temple of Kedarnath & during this time, the deity is worshipped in the Omkareshwar Temple of Ukhimath. Usha, the daughter of Banasur, was the inspiration for the name of this place. Tourists can enjoy the view of the snow-capped Himalayas from this region.

Kedarnath Temple, located amid the Kedarnath Mountain Range, is a prominent pilgrimage center where the Jyotirlinga of Hindu Lord Shiva is enshrined. This Jyotirlinga of Kedarnath, located at an altitude of 3584 meters, is the most significant of all the 12 Jyotirlingas. This temple is adjacent to an old temple, which according to legends was built by the Pandavas.

Deoria Tal is a crystal clear lake situated at an altitude of 2438 meters above sea level, at a distance of 3 km from Sari. It is the same lake where Yaksha put four questions to the Pandavas, as per the legend. The village of Sari is the last bus terminal on the Chopta Ukhimath road & the lake can be reached after trekking for 2 km from this place. The lake is surrounded by thick forests comprising trees like rhododendrons and a Mahal tree.

Kanchula Korak Musk Deer Sanctuary is located on Chopta Gopeshwar Road and sprawls over an area of 5 sq kms. This sanctuary is enveloped with dense forest, and visitors can enjoy splendid views of nature. This sanctuary is renowned for breeding musk deer.  
 
6: Tungnath Temple

Tungnath Temple, one of the Panch Kedar, is acclaimed as the highest Shiva temple in the world & is located at an elevation of 3680 meters above sea level in the Tungnath Mountain Range. According to Hindu mythology, the temple was built by Arjuna, one of the Pandavas, from the Hindu epic, the Mahabharata. The literal meaning of Tungnath is Lord of the Peaks. The arm of Lord Shiva is worshipped in this temple & it represents the North Indian style of architecture. 
 
7: Madhyamaheshwar Temple
Madhyamaheshwar Temple
Madhyamaheshwar Temple, devoted to the Hindu Lord Shiva, is situated in the village of Mansuna in Chopta at an elevation of 3497 meters above sea level. The Panch Kedar includes Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar, and Kalpeshwar in the pecking order. Thus, the temple falls at the fourth position in the Panch Kedar pilgrimage. In this temple, devotees worship the stomach of Lord Shiva.

Hanuman Chatti is at an altitude of 2400 meters above sea level, at the meeting point of the River Hanuman Ganga and the River Yamuna. Earlier, this place was the starting point of the trek to the Hindu pilgrimage site Yamunotri, at a distance of 13 km from here. A motorable road has now been constructed between Hanuman Chatti and Janki Chatti. Devotees can buy necessary items like medicines and raincoats from this place.

Uttarakhand also called the Land of the Gods & has been a place of worship and pilgrimage from time immemorial. Lord Shiva is the most revered deity in Uttarakhand & one can find many temples and shrines dedicated to him. Out of all the temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, the cluster of five shrines of Shiva is the most revered. They are known as Panch Kedar. According to Mahabharata, when Pandavas were searching for Lord Shiva, he turned himself into a bull to avoid detection. However, when Bheema tried to capture the bull, it disappeared and later reappeared in body parts at five locations, presently known as Panch Kedar. The hump reappeared at Kedarnath, the arms appeared in Tungnath, the navel appeared in Madhyamaheshwar, the face showed up at Rudranath, and the hair and head appeared in Kalpeshwar. The Pandavs built temples at these five places for worshipping Shiva. 
 
10: Chota Char Dham

Chota Char Dham small four abodes is one of the most important Hindu Pilgrimages in India. It comprises of four most holy sites of Uttarakhand, namely Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. When and how these places got linked in a pilgrimage circuit together is not known. Each of the places has its own individual and legendary history. But perhaps it is the greatness and mysticism of each site that has qualified them to form a sacred pilgrimage tour. Till 1950s going to the four most sacred sites of Uttarakhand meant embarking on a strenuous journey on foot through the hilly trails. People, like wandering sadhus, and those who could afford to travel with an entourage, were the most likely and regular pilgrims of Chota Char Dham. After the 1962 Indo-China war, India put massive efforts in building means of better connectivity to and infrastructure at border areas. Now the roads could take one till the nearest points of the holy abodes. This encouraged people from other backgrounds to initiate a tour of Char Dham circuit in Himalayas.

Rudranath Temple at an elevation of 2286 meters above sea level in Rudranath. The temple, dedicated to the Hindu Lord Shiva, holds great religious significance among the Hindus. In this temple, the face of Lord Shiva is worshipped as Neelkantha Mahadeva. According to mythology, after the war of Mahabharata, Pandavas came to the Himalayas to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva for their sins. However, Lord Shiva did not wish to meet them and escaped in the form of Nandi Bull.

Koteshwar Temple is a famous Hindu temple at a distance of 3 km from Rudraprayag city. The Koteshwar Mahadev Temple was constructed in the 14th century & rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries. Most of the devotees who go on the Chardham Yatra proceed only after seeing this temple, present in the form of a cave & is situated on the banks of the Alaknanda river. According to the beliefs, Lord Shiva meditated in this cave while going to Kedarnath & this idol is naturally made. The naturally formed  Shivling inside the cave has been established here since ancient times. The mesmerizing view of the Alaknanda river flowing outside the temple attracts devotees and tourists.

How To Reach Rudra Prayag

By Air - The Jolly Grant Airport of Dehradun is the nearest air base located at a distance of 183 kms from the Rudraprayag town.

 

By Rail - The Rishikesh Railway Station is the nearest railhead to Rudraprayag. It is a small railway station with few trains.

 

By Road - Tourists can also reach Rudraprayag by buses. This place is strategically located on the National Highway 58, which connects Delhi to Badrinath. During summers, all buses travelling from Delhi to Badrinath pass through Rudraprayag on the way to Joshimath. Regular buses are also available from Rishikesh to Rudraprayag.

 

Local Transport - Rudraprayag is a small town where one will be hiking or trekking most of the time. Other than that one can also hire taxis, or even better book a private car for comfortable commutation from one place to another. However, make sure to plan the trip timing according to the weather conditions prevailing in the area.
