The caves are karstic limestone structures extending to a depth of 80 meters & considered the deepest cave in India. William King, the British geologist, discovered this million years old cave in the year 1807.

Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary is located on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam and is a perfect example of natural harmony between the dry seasonal forest and the evergreen meadows. The name of the Sanctuary is derived from the Kambalakonda Mountain & covers an area of 71 square kilometers of evergreen forest. The Sanctuary houses many rare species of wildlife animals such as panthers, Sambar deer, spotted deer, barking deer, jackal, wild boar, and wild dog & various species of flora and fauna.

Ross Hill, popularly known as Kanyamary Konda, is one of the highest peaks in the Eastern Ghats. The hill was named after an Englishman, Mr. Ross, who constructed his house on this hill in 1864 & later transformed it into a Roman Catholic chapel named, Our Lady of the Sacred Heat. The path to the chapel is beautifully adorned with Catholic icons and images. It is dedicated to three different faiths & hence visited by people belonging to all religions & castes. It also houses Ishak Medina, a tomb of the Sayed Ali Medina, a Muslim saint. Venkateswara hill has a beautiful temple dedicated to Sri Venkateswara Konda. It offers a beautiful view of various beaches, a shipbuilding yard, and the Visakhapatnam Port.

The War Memorial of Vizag, popularly known as the Victory at Sea & is close to Ramakrishna Beach, built in memory of the soldiers and their victory during the Indo-Pak war of 1971. The memorial was established, by the Naval Command in 1996 & houses several missiles, bombs, a fighter plane & tank. There is a concrete wall surrounding the memorial & a tower within it, much like the Amar Jawan Jyoti of the India Gate.

The museum was opened in 1991 & housed in a 150-year-old architecturally impressive Dutch Bungalow. The collections in the museum include an ancient armory, crockery, coins, silk costumes, jewelry, stuffed animals, portraits, manuscripts, letters, diaries & a Shell of an unexploded bomb dropped by the Japanese during World War II.

At a distance of 6 km from Vizag Railway Station, the Submarine Museum situated on Ramakrishna Beach is a Russian-built submarine of the Indian Navy (INS Kurusura) turned into a museum in 2001. Submarine Museum is one of the prime attractions of Vizag city. The Submarine Museum is the first submarine-turned museum in the whole of Asia & the second in the World. INS Kurusura Submarine is a Soviet-built I-641 class Submarine inducted into the Indian Navy on 18 December 1969, & the same was decommissioned on 28 February 2001 after 31 years of glorious service to the nation. A submarine was brought from the sea to Ramakrishna Beach to create awareness among the public, & demonstrate how submarines work during wartime & illustrate the life inside the submarine. The tourism department of Visakhapatnam looks after the maintenance of the INS Kurusura Submarine. It is one of the central tourist attractions of the city.

The Zoo Park has differentiated the sections for primates, carnivores, lesser carnivores, small mammals, reptiles, ungulates, and birds, all caged in their natural ambiance. As per the belief of the Hindu religion, an east-facing entrance brings luck and prosperity while the west one brings victory, and luckily the Simhachalam temple faces west. The temple is situated among hills covered with cashew trees, shrubs, and mango groves. Pilgrims visit the temple to bestow their offerings to the auspicious deities. The word 'Simha' means lion in Sanskrit & 'Adri' or 'Achala' means hill. The lion man incarnation of Lord Vishnu is the presiding deity of the temple & is one of the eighteen shrines of Lord Narasimha. During Akshaya Tritiya, it is once again covered with sandalwood paste since it can only be seen without sandalwood for 12 hours each year.

Bavikonda is one of the prominent attractions in the Sankaram village of Anakapalli & being a popular Buddhist excavation site, the place is known as a Buddhist heritage spot, which reveals its history. The architectural remnants of the Buddhist period are the earliest of their kind in South India and are the prime attraction of the place. The cave chamber is rectangular in shape & segmented into 20 compartments by four cross rocks of 16 massive pillars. Besides this, the place is also famous for housing the ancient statues of Buddha in various postures.

How To Reach Visakhapatnam

By Air - The Visakhapatnam Airport is located 7 kms from the city. It is a domestic airport and has daily flights from Hyderabad and Delhi and also flights from Calcutta and Chennai.

 

By Rail - Visakhapatnam Junction is on the main broad gauge railway line from Calcutta to Chennai that runs along the coast. There are many connections available from other parts of the country including Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata and Vijayawada.

 

By Road - Visakhapatnam is connected to Chennai and Kolkata by NH 5. Private buses and State Roadways buses service areas in and around Andhra Pradesh and connect Vizag to neighbouring places like Behrampore and Puri in Orissa. The state transport buses are really almost the very basic in four-wheel travel. More comfortable bus travel by way of Volvo buses that ply the route to Vizag are from Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata and Vijayawada.

 

Local Transport - Local transportation is available in the form of buses, cycle rickshaws, autos and taxis. The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation operates buses in and around the city.
